Eternal Life

Eternal Life

This is what God wants for you, it is God’s purpose for you, it is God’s reason for creation and it is the thing most people will reject by the choices they make.
God wants those who love the truth and in the framework of that love are persons who are humble enough to reject what they currently believe, to even forego what they want in life, if necessary, IF they find the truth about life. There are not many people who are open-minded enough to listen, or read about things that conflict with their most closely held beliefs.

On the other hand there are people who consider themselves open to something different and “pride themselves” on this characteristic.
Invariably, there will be things in the scriptures that even an open-minded person may not like and therefore they will look for a compromise, for some way of getting around a troublesome teaching. Often people have found some contrived variation of God’s word to be a good substitution and comforting for the scriptures they cannot accept. Cain was the first to provide a substitution for what God required. The way you overcome your own logic believing God will accept something different (maybe in your mind slightly different) is to have a love of the truth.

Love Of The Truth

God in His perfection has designed a test for humankind to reveal a certain kind of person. One of the characteristics the test reveals is a person’s attitude toward truth. The distinction of one who loves the truth is demonstrated by their willingness to seek and then obey even if the truth turns out to be in opposition to what they currently believe or in opposition to what they personally desire. If along the road to truth they sense potential conflict, they “stay the course.” Many have faltered as the truth is becoming apparent and find a way to interpret God’s word that supports their view. Over history this disrespect for God’s word has caused many to create their own doctrines and not surprisingly they usually have many followers. The issues that were the hardest to accept for this person will also be stumbling blocks for others. The love of the truth is then an incredible separator of people who love God. Jesus said, he did not come to bring peace (on earth, i.e. between people or nations), but a sword to separate. In the parable of the wheat and the tares there will be a separation and it is eternal. Jesus concludes the parable saying, “Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.” The deeper meaning is a separation between good and evil, truth and error, right and wrong, and between God’s word versus the doctrines of men and women. You see the person who loves the truth, loves good, loves right, loves God and His word is sought by God. It is easy to separate people since during a person’s lifetime “the real you surfaces” in your choices. Poor choices or we might say choosing sin is universal, but can be forgiven by God. This is why Jesus came that is, to be the solution for sin. Jesus, being the choice made by those who love the truth.

Let us look at some of the ways God uses the concept of a LOVE OF THE TRUTH.
First, God ties a love of the truth to your salvation. A requirement for heaven is your dedication to the truth. The truth reveals Jesus as Lord and defines how your past sins can be forgiven.

2 Thessalonians 2.10-12

10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie,
12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

In order to find the truth you need to be consistently pursuing it. The “world” does not help, but hinders your search. The “world” offers both godless alternatives to the truth and religious inventions. It is necessary to love the truth to conquer these very real obstacles. Then you will need courage to obey and live the truth. Jesus refers to himself as the way, the truth and the life. This is a high-level overview of Jesus as the only WAY, representing the TRUTH and the desired final outcome – Eternal Life. There is typically a great deal to overcome in arriving at a knowledge of the truth. This is why God refers to a love the truth AS A NECESSITY.

1 Peter 1.22,23

22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,
23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever

Life is a battle between a love of the truth and a love of the world. Very personally, it is a battle between you and sin. You will not win that battle for your soul unless you have the truth. God has provided a solution to sin and reveals it in the word of truth of the gospel. God compares the one who does the will of God (the truth) to the one who loves the world and warns the latter that the world they love is passing away. On the other hand the one that does the will of God abides forever – Eternal Life.

1 John 2.15-17

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Abiding forever is of course, eternal life or heaven.

2 Corinthians 5.14,15 below, mixes the love of Christ in dying for all with the choice made by some to obey the author of eternal salvation and live for the Savior and no longer for themselves. It is in obedience to the gospel that a person dies to sin raising into a new life, now to be lived “In Christ.”

2 Corinthians 5.14,15

14 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died;
15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.

It is interesting how God says, “that if one died for all, then all died.” It is another way of saying what is said in Romans 3.23, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” However, in this short phrase in 2 Corinthians is also the answer to sin – namely that Christ died for all. He died a physical death because all people have died to sin. Thus we have the beautiful picture of a person dying to sin when they are buried with Christ in baptism (Romans 6.3-6).

The way to live for Christ is just as simple as demonstrating your love by daily keeping the commandments of God.

John 14.15

15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.

As mentioned, Jesus defines Himself as the way, the truth and the life and the only way to God. It is clear there is no other way, no other truth and but one way to Eternal Life.

John 14.6

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

The comparison of Romans 2.5-8 (below) is between Eternal Life and the Wrath of God depending on whether a person obeys the truth or obeys unrighteousness.

Romans 2.5-8

5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,
6 who “will render to each one according to his deeds”:
7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality;
8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath,

Your Goal
Above All Else Should Be
To Achieve Eternal Life

The scriptures continuously bring us back to the soul and its salvation because that is what life is all about and about absolutely nothing else. The road to Eternal Life is the same for every person and it requires a knowledge of the truth. We might say, the truth is what makes us free from sin …. “and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

God’s desire is for your salvation and for you to know the truth. He so badly wants you to know of Eternal Life and its ultimate importance that He also provides the truth in regard to failing in life (indignation and wrath).

1 Timothy 2.3,4

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

It is easy and “delightful” to envision God wanting us to have a knowledge of eternal life AND a yearning for us to succeed. God has no desire for us to fail, but has not held back a knowledge of truth regarding failure. As we better understand God, we better understand that His justice is perfect. We understand that an essential element of our success is having a fear of the Lord. A person who loves the truth can understand how God’s love includes fearing Him.

Time and time again God emphasizes the critical difference between those who DO THE TRUTH versus those who only proclaim Christ as Lord. Those who love the truth, find it despite all the obstacles and then of course continuing to love the truth, obey and keep the commands of God.

1 John 2.4

4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

The whole of scripture is consistent in its message regarding doing the truth versus claiming Christ as your savior. If you feared the Lord, you would take seriously God’s word and there would be no peace in the things taught to you by men or women – unless they aligned perfectly with the word of God. How can you go against the will of God and think heaven will some day be your home.

Matthew 7.21

21 Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.

There is no doubt that the one who LOVES THE TRUTH will be “DOING the will of My Father in heaven.”

Love is the great motivator of God for His creation, and thus for providing Eternal Life. God wanted to demonstrate His love in relation to your desire to seek Him, find Him and obey Him. The reason He provided humankind with a free will was to allow each person the ability to choose to love Him.

Overcoming “The World” And “The World’s Religions”

There are vast amounts of money spent to project humankind as knowledgeable in matters of our existence. It is believed, humankind figured out how everything came into existence and everything began with a “big bang.” The human race also discovered how life evolved from non-life. We have the intelligence that has brought about our technological age.

There are likewise enormous sums of money spent to support the RELIGIONS OF HUMANKIND. There is a high level of propaganda and finances brought to build beautiful edifices and supporting materials as well as salaries for those directly involved in promoting humankind’s doctrines. There are universities associated with many religions and funds to support the various propaganda they perform. Often, the idea of propaganda and indoctrination are associated with promoting great evil including cruelty and hatred in misleading, especially young minds. Just as dire are the religions which promote peace, and do many apparent good deeds. The “religious” training of people into anything that is not the truth is deadly to the soul, that is to what life is all about. Like those who support the idea of no God, they use various media to spread their message. Religion is every bit as dangerous (if not more so) to your soul as those who promote an atheist philosophy.

Contrast that with the truth, which by design uses no monetary means to entice people, just the word of God. The great edifices, churches are not “for God” but just to entice people – really for people. The worship to God is spiritual (in Spirit and truth) and as Paul explained to the Athenians, “Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything.”

Acts 17.24-27

24 “God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.
25 Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.
26 And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings,
27 so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;

The scriptures indicate God’s completed word IS THAT which is perfect. Perfect in every way and specifically in converting the soul. Those people who love the truth will not find God via the various often well-funded religions of humankind. They will find God through faith, but not in the idea of faith used by religions, which amounts to faith in humankind’s religions and practices. Faith is defined by God and is for those who have a love of the truth, which is tied uniquely to the word of God.

John 17.17

17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

There should be nothing more important than achieving Eternal Life and the hope of heaven is before you in the truth of the gospel.

Colossians 1.5

5 because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel

God defines faith in the first verse of Hebrews 11.

Hebrews 11.1-3

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.
3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

Here God ties faith to hope and evidence not seen. The hope God refers to is the hope of eternal life – that which is at the core of God’s purpose for humankind and thus His creation of all things.

Titus 1.2

2 in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began

The evidence of things not seen would seem to be evidence that has no value and yet God explains that the worlds were framed by the word of God such that the things which are seen were made by things which are invisible.

Romans 1.20

20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,

So we have faith tied to SEEING. That is, faith is not blind and not a mystery and even the worlds were framed by the word of God. It will be in the word of God where faith resides so even though we do not see the Creator (unseen) we see God in the creation, which itself was framed by the word of God.
God brings all this together by indicating the SOURCE OF FAITH, which is apparent by many scriptures. However, He does it in a way the that is very simple. In some way we hear/read the word of God and that is the SOURCE OF FAITH.

Romans 10.17

17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

The definition of faith is, “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” The scriptures are saying, “THE WORD OF GOD PROVIDES THE EVIDENCE OF THINGS NOT SEEN.” We might say that WE SEE GOD IN CREATION and the GOD WE SEE IN CREATION is the GOD OF THE BIBLE from the evidence heard/read in the scriptures.

So, we have tied together God’s love, the love of the truth, faith and the word of God in relation to eternal life. People do not need the inventions, the teachings of men and women. Indeed, these are the often highly sophisticated and elaborately developed doctrines that lead people away from truth. In the “Christian world” there was and still is a disrespect for the word of God and consequently the essential truths are missing. In place of the truths are the many doctrines of the many religious organizations that fill he world. Although the bible speaks of one faith, each religion has used their own ADJECTIVE to define THEIR faith.
Catholic faith
Protestant faith
Islamic faith
Mormon faith
All of these terms and their doctrines represent something NOT found in the scriptures. The faith we have in God carries none of these names. These faiths amount to believing in the doctrines of men and women, usually mingled with the scriptures. They cannot say they have faith in the scriptures, because the scriptures do not contain what they teach. Some things may be the same, but they have all added to and taken away from God’s message.

We live in a world where there is faith in science, in technology, really faith in men and women. This faith extends well beyond the expertise of individuals or groups and into things that cannot be proven. Many people of science are aware that the theories in relation to the beginnings of “everything” including living things are simply “the best they can do.” The evidence they present would be called circumstantial evidence and if the truth were known there are hundreds of assumptions needed to even call it circumstantial. There is no real evidence, which had always been the hallmark of science. Unfortunately they teach “the best they can do” as the truth.

Obviousness Of God

I suppose there is nothing more obvious than God’s existence. We can see God in everything just by observing all we see around us. This would be the natural course of things and it really takes some interaction from men and women to tell us in effect that what we see and who we are all came about by natural processes. God, the only God, the God of the bible specifically points out that what we naturally conclude in observation is the truth and makes this declaration in Romans 1.20.
The failure to see God in our existence and as the reason for EVERYTHING is the most foolish of all things. The irony is that in today’s world you are not seen as foolish, but wise. There is nothing even remotely comparable to this terrible and eternal mistake. I suspect the most devastating thing about failing in life – that is, failure to achieve heaven will be the realization that you rejected the “OBVIOUSNESS OF GOD.” In so doing, you did not seek God and truth. Others who could see God in the existence of everything, but failed to take seriously God and His word will also fail.

Let us focus on the obviousness of God. The world, the wisdom of the world typically rejects God and if you doubt that look to what children are taught in school.

It is not necessary to be a scientist to understand the existence of God, in fact the majority of the scientific communities work at finding alternatives to the obvious existence of God. These are the wisdom of the wise God refers to inasmuch as they work hard to discredit the obvious. There are some who use science to prove God and creation – calling themselves creationists. Although they make many good points, they are not necessary and can confuse. God explains there is no need for something different than what He has provided in Romans.
Romans 1.20 previously referred to, and stated again below:

Romans 1.20

20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,

The Science We Know

Science is limited by what God provided in His creation of physical things. Humankind has only scratched the surface of the science that God built into creation. We try to fit God into what we know about science and declare on that basis what is possible and how everything MUST have come into existence. This is not science because pure science does not begin with the answer in mind. Science theorizes and then proves or disproves. When you begin with, “God does not exist” and with the belief the science we have discovered is all there is, then we have a very limited number of possibilities for defining existence. As soon as we have a “viable-sounding” answer to our existence we can be comfortable in denying God. It is rather silly to limit God to what we know, to the science of the world we observe. It should be obvious that God would be infinitely greater than His creation. God describes the creation in terms of things we can understand, by laying out how day-by-day He created all things. So, we see God speaking things into existence and this might be expected from a being infinitely greater than what He created. Despite a world that searches for answers in known science, it is apparent to those who understand God that there is no way that science can provide answers to creation, to life. Moreover, that it is in no way important for humankind to understand the science of creation, but the opposite. That is, God wants people to see Him in creation by the things created and understand from His word that He is the God of the bible. This is the path God wants for you, it is the way to Eternal Life. This is God’s way.

How Hard Is It To Understand That There Is A Creator?
It Is Really Very Simple
It Requires No Special Knowledge Of Science
God, In His Perfection Seeks People With A Good Heart
The Proud, The Wise Of The World Will Never See God In Creation

Imagine if at your death you find yourself in a lost state and you contemplate your “failure to think with an open mind” during your lifetime. You place a rock in existence 14 billion years ago (and nothing else) and then envision watching it (somehow) for the next 14 billion years. Do you think that rock could develop into all we see and include living things? That would be ridiculous. Then to further realize that there is no reason for that rock to exist and why does time exist? Our world is one of mathematical precision in everything from the laws that govern the earth we inhabit to the precise spins of the planets and movements of the many universes. There is complexity everywhere and especially in living things. The design is beyond comprehension. So when God says that, “His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead” that is exactly what a humble and thinking person will see. It is so incredibly unwise to see anything else that God says of such a person, “the fool has said in His heart that there is no God.” The proof of that for the proud person will finally be realized at their death.

Man wants to explain creation, thereby worshiping the creature (the created ones, us) instead of the creator. Idolatry has many forms, but is always doing things our way instead of God’s way. God indicates that all you see that is from humankind is really just things that are from God.

Hebrews 3.4

4 For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.

So that rock or primordial mass that “exploded” or had a “singularity event” was apparently a very smart rock. Actually, all the theories of men and women serve to discredit the scriptures and bring some comfort to lifestyles that the God of the bible opposes. The frequent name used as EVIDENCE is science.

The root cause behind all the fabrications of humankind in relation to “existence” is to provide something OTHER THAN a God who makes rules and requires obedience. Specifically, there needed to be an alternative to the God of the bible. The real world of our existence has everything deteriorating, corrupting with time. It might be our bodies or a piece of steel or anything, but they will change over time and NOT get better, stronger. God has left us with one possible answer and revealed that in the very first words of scripture, “In The Beginning God.”

God in His perfection cannot lie and thus we know what is coming, we know how to be successful and what kind of existence will occur in failure. Life is about the soul and nothing else. God has defined a most wonderful existence beyond our lifetime, infinitely better than we can imagine and calls it heaven or eternal life.

Human Science Designed By God, Commensurate With His Purpose

It is truly peculiar that humankind in its obvious limitations uses those limits to reject God by explaining how “all this” could have happened within the framework of OUR known science. We can see our limits and they are a physical being locked in a physical universe and in a time domain. If we have a deeper understanding of life as God has revealed it we know that the “real” me has a spiritual component. That spiritual component is locked in a physical body, which then is locked in a physical universe and a time domain. Admittedly, most people do not understand or believe in this spiritual component. Nonetheless, we recognize our physical and time limitations. The first step in creating an alternative reason for our existence requires we assume God is limited like we are and that would seem to be a very significant assumption – even unreasonable. If the science of God is infinitely greater than what God provided in His creation then it would be futile to try to explain by our known science, our existence.
The God of the bible tells us this very thing.

Isaiah 55.9

9 “For the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

It is irrational to conclude there is no God. However, if the motivation of a person, or of science is to find something, anything that is an alternative to the scriptures then SOMETHING WILL BE FOUND to satisfy. On the other hand if a person loves the truth, then God’s existence and the truth that leads to Eternal Life will be found. This is God’s way of differentiating each person. Jesus, in obedience to the Father (Hebrews 5.8.9) became the Author of Eternal Salvation to every person who obeys Him. He requires those who want to save their lives to change from what THEY WANT in life to day-in and day-out following the doctrine of Christ (Mark 8.35,36). Jesus ends those verses by saying that if a man living for himself gains everything he wants, i.e. “gains the whole world” he has nothing if he loses his soul. Your life is about the soul and nothing else. God in His love provides a solution for your sin and offers Eternal Life. The portal to knowledge BEYOND what we can know (in the way God has limited humankind) is the scriptures. We know how all things began and how all things will end. We know about God’s existence and His purpose. The test is described and the rules are given. We know how to achieve Eternal Life. We know what pleases God and what God hates. We know that after the death, burial and resurrection that Jesus was raised up to heaven to sit at the right hand of God having been given all authority over heaven and earth.

Matthew 28.18

18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.”

We know Jesus will return in the air and it will be the end for every person. Their fate has been determined and every knee will bow with those “In Christ” going to Eternal Life and the others to the judgment and suffering the loss of Eternal Life. God in His graciousness tells us that the kingdom is delivered to the Father when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power.

1 Corinthians 15:24

24 Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power.

Humankind in all their guessing about our existence, in all the supposing about God and His nature and about the afterlife knows nothing correctly unless God has revealed it. God has told us about various aspects of Eternal Life, like “God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed.” In addition to all the advice about how to live, often how to live to avoid sin He provides insight into the Divine Nature. He summarizes the whole duty of man in Ecclesiastes.

Ecclesiastes 12.13,14

13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: FEAR GOD AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS,
For this is man’s all.
14 For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.

Above in 1 Corinthians 15:24, we learn that there will be an end to all rule and all authority and power. WE KNOW SO LITTLE as human beings with our true essence (our soul) captured in a physical body, in a physical universe and contained in something God invented called time. We cannot envision existence without time and in fact our scientists count on time to explain how it took billions of years for everything to come into existence and then life and finally intelligent life. Yet, God speaks of His plan for humankind – namely, Eternal Life – BEFORE TIME BEGAN.

Titus 1.2

2 in hope of ETERNAL LIFE which God, who cannot lie, promised BEFORE TIME BEGAN

In our physical existence, there is always rule, authority and power. Shortly before being raised into heaven, Jesus told His apostles that all authority had been given to Him in heaven and on earth as He had accomplished the will of the Father.

However, this idea of having rule, authority and power was just part of a system God put in place as long as there was humanity. That is, the physical existence wherein the soul is contained in a physical shell. Now at Christ’s return, there will be an end of all things. The kingdom that Jesus came preaching and was established as the church (spiritual) is returned to the Father. There is no longer a need for rule, authority and power. Quite amazing, there is an end to all rule and all authority and power. At the end, there will be God and His obedient children and Eternal Life. There is no longer a need for physical bodies, for time, or for rules, authority and power. We know these things because God decided to reveal them and that is the only way we understand anything beyond the natural order God put in place from the beginning. Is it essential that we know the physical body will not be important, or that time will no longer exist or that there will no longer be a system of rules? No, it is not important nor can we understand these things very well or at all. In fact, knowledge of these things could be expected to simply raise more questions. Similarly, it is not important to know the science of creation and hundreds of other things that we might wonder about. It is important to see God as creator and that He is the God of the bible and recognize His rules, authority and power and be obedient to them. It is important to understand that currently Christ has all authority over heaven and earth and thus to follow the doctrine of Christ.

2 John 1.9

9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.

It is fair to say that on one side there is the “Obviousness of God” and on the other side, the “Ridiculousness of Human Wisdom.” The latter often trying to explain our existence in a way that takes God out of the picture. In that unfortunate and proud process, we lose the only thing that matters, namely our soul.

Beyond Comprehension

It is amazing that the most important thing in life is hidden by the world. Eternal Life is the very basis for creation and for our existence and yet it is hidden. The public, the media seldom mention God and when they do it is often to ridicule or make religion look foolish and paranoid. Interestingly, their portrayal is usually valid because the craziness of HUMANKIND’s RELIGION is often correct. The problem is that people have difficulty differentiating false religion from the truth and thus “lump” the religions of the world with “GOD.” A person who loves the truth would never make such a huge mistake. There is nothing God abhors more than false teaching in relation to His purpose. Nonetheless, the idea of God, of Eternal Life is left out of our day-to-day existence and seldom discussed. Humanity spends its days in the pursuit of hundreds of different things to BE BETTER, to find loving relationships and attain various lofty goals. Sometimes those goals might be very noble or very selfish, but the only thing that matters either at our death or the return of Jesus at the end of time will be our relationship with God’s Son. Few, according to the Savior will follow God’s narrow and difficult way to Eternal Life.

Matthew 7.13,14

13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.
14 Because narrow is the gate and DIFFICULT is the way which leads to LIFE, and there are FEW who find it.

Of course, the LIFE of the verse above is Eternal Life. As you better understand God, you will see the simplicity that God provides for humankind. There is good and evil, Eternal Life and Eternal Loss, sin and righteousness, obedience and disobedience, the obviousness of God and the ridiculousness of humanities efforts to exalt the creature. Although God’s purpose and will can be simply understood, the difficult part is your decision to do the right thing. Can you overcome the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life and live for Christ and the gospel? This is why there will be just a few who travel the way and enter into Eternal Life.

Eternal Life Can Be Yours

You can observe all the wondrous things this world has to offer and dedicate yourself to getting your share. Every person also observes the pain and suffering of this life. A wise person realizes their life will include some of each. In general, the best things of life from the physical point of view will diminish and there will be more of the pain/sorrow that comes with age. Of course, this is just “on the average.” Some may never realize any of the joys of this physical life, but always struggle with the difficulties and painful aspects during their lifetime or just the opposite. There are millions of possibilities that will define your life. The events of our life often have us changing our goals and the physical goals like money, security, education, family, homes, vacations and others are less important or we might say “down-sized.” The things that we believed would make us happy are not as important and this is a natural process of a maturing person. However, not all people “mature,” but hold to their original goals and even intensify them. Strangely, these people often are the ones who become bitter and “more” greedy. Whereas, the wiser person has learned from life what is really important and it is not the physical treasures. In fact, the person with the right attitude is seeking God and the true purpose of life and sees beyond this life. Just for ease of discussion we could say some people remain immature throughout their life, while others mature and are no longer greatly impressed by the physical. In the best case, a person transitions to be spiritually mature. They are like the verse below that we will discuss, where their life takes them from the seen / physical / immature existence to the unseen / eternal / mature existence.

God’s design is such that every person can transition by their choices and the things once so important are no longer of much or any importance. There is a limited amount of time, your lifetime, to get yourself into a position where Eternal Life is your goal and such is seen in your actions. If you pursue getting all you can in life, in the process laying up treasures on this earth there will be no time to make preparations that assure Eternal Life. The scriptures tell us that, “Today is the day of salvation” because there is no wisdom in filling our day pursuing those physical and temporary things.

2 Corinthians 4.18 makes this most important distinction between the seen and the unseen and the temporary and eternal.

2 Corinthians 4.18

18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

The unseen and eternal thing is Eternal Life. The focus for God’s people is the unseen and includes at the highest level God, Jesus, the Spirit of God, your soul and of course heaven – Eternal Life. How much time do you have to spend on seeking all the things of this life that are desired and temporary? I would suggest that you do not waste any of your precious time in pursuit of things that are not eternal. More importantly, this is the point God is trying to make to you – “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”
A “great many” people believe that they will die and then they will end up in heaven (if there is a heaven) because they judge themselves as good or better than most. Also, in this group of hopeful people are those who have been told that by doing such and such, namely following the doctrines of this group they will find themselves in heaven. None of these “great many” will be in heaven.

Eternal Life can be yours if YOU MAKE THE DECISIONS that allow you to succeed. God wants you to succeed, it is the very reason for creation. Since the beginning of time people have changed, modified, substituted for God’s word the things they wanted. Eternal life is there for those who accept God’s way despite the difficulties it may present. In so doing you will demonstrate your love of God – a love that is greater than your love of self(what you want). It is exactly what Jesus said was the requirement to save your life – namely to save your life you must lose it. Instead of living your life for yourself, you live it for Him and the gospel.
